Josey Corbett, LMHC

Josey Corbett is a therapist specializing in trauma.  She has over 20 years of counseling experience and has been working as a Case Manager and Social Worker during some of that time as well. She works with individual, couples and family therapy, and maintains a private practice in Lake City, FL.

“I have found that I am well-suited to therapy and particularly social work; I have a knack for putting people at ease and finding solutions within the strengths you already possess.”

What was your path to becoming a therapist?  I became interested in counseling while in college for the first time. I majored in Christian counseling and decided to become a cross-cultural specialist. At that time, the field had started to expand in this area. My goal was to work with families who lived in third culture situations, such as missionaries and military families. To begin that journey, I went to live in another country for a year, which became four years. When I came back home to Florida, I began to work in case management fields and in adoption. I began to realize the role that trauma, particularly childhood trauma, plays in forming who we see ourselves as. I went back to school in my 30s to get my Master of Social Work degree and then my LCSW. I have found that I am well-suited to therapy and particularly social work; I have a knack for putting people at ease and finding solutions within the strengths you already possess.

What should someone know about working with you?  I generally begin with existing strengths, self-trust, and self-calming skills. To the extent that I am able, I attempt to present a very calming and open office or virtual setting. There is almost always homework that involves processing thoughts and feelings.

What do you do to continue learning and building competencies as a provider?  I love to learn and I am honing my craft in several areas at this time. I have begun to realize that dissociative identity disorder and gender and sexual identity issues are becoming more widely known but not necessarily more widely understood. I have had the privilege of working with members of these communities and attending training and conferences in these areas.

“I generally begin with existing strengths, self-trust, and self-calming skills.”
